6 Great Gift Ideas for an Open House

It’s no secret that a great open house should be a part of your marketing strategy for selling your home. But how do you go about planning for a successful open house? First, marketing your event is key. You want to cast a wide net, to reach the largest number of potential home buyers -- but you also want to be sure that you are marketing to qualified, interested buyers.

Once you have a solid marketing strategy in place, it is time to start thinking about the actual open house itself. Check out our recent blog post on the ultimate checklist for open houses, with tips and ideas for buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals.

Launching a Successful Open House

Use this guide to make sure you have all of your bases covered for a successful open house -- there are ideas for preparing and staging the home for the open house, as well as ideas for promoting your open house and, “day of” tricks of the trade to make the home more appealing to potential buyers. Finally, there are also suggestions for interacting with potential buyers at the open house, as well as how to follow up with buyers and other real estate agents.

But could there be even more that you could do to help ensure a successful open house, as well as set you apart from the other homes for sale? There sure is. Gifts are a great way to set your listing apart from other homes available on the market. Gifts not only welcome your visitors and make them want to stay, they also sell yourself and your brand and make buyers feel more comfortable. Consider these great gift ideas for your next open house.

  1. Cookies or other treats from a local bakery or cafe, bagged in cute packaging. Cookies or candies are common items to find in any local house, but you can certainly find ways to set you apart. Focus on the packaging, attach your card to the bag, etc.
  2. Branded marketing materials, such as pens, notepads, magnets, thumb drives, etc. People can always use pens or notepads, whether in the car, home or office. They’re slightly more expensive, but handy thumb drives can be a great way to set you apart and market your brand to potential home buyers.
  3. Contests or raffles to give away larger prizes. Consider raffling off a gift basket or a gift card to a store with mass appeal (think home improvement stores, mass retailers, etc). Bonus: This is a great way to get contact information for visitors who may otherwise be hesitant to leave their name or contact information behind.
  4. A bottle of wine. Our favorite: the infamous Charles Shaw varietal from Trader Joe’s, affectionately known as “Two Buck Chuck.” A bottle of wine gives the impression of a bigger ticket gift, but there are plenty of affordable options available. Consider putting your business card info onto stickers, and attach it to the bottle.
  5. Custom cookies. Check with your local bakeries, as many can scan a digital image and use it to create photo cookies. This can be a great idea for setting your open houses apart, and also serves as a great item to help potential home buyers remember your listing.
  6. Consider purchasing small denomination gift cards in bulk (e.g., $5 gift cards to a coffee shop) and attach your business card. Just about everyone loves a cup of coffee, and they will appreciate the gesture.
